IR / Aeroplane

My old Nikon 995 has been redundant for a few years now, so I decided to convert it to shoot infra-red pictures and tested it today. I'm quite happy with the results but whether there will be any need or use for such stark pictures is another matter, but for me its another aspect of photography to explore.

In the following short series no optical filters or Photoshop effects have been used except for some minor contrast adjustment.

This is awe inspiring and will most definitely be the most impacting photo
that I will view today. The depth !! and the airplane looks so miniscule in
proportion to the clouds which are massive and unreal in their solidity,
yet retaining their pillow softness. This beautiful airplane looks like it
goes forward into a journey like no other, before or since. Superb work
and a spotlight deserving photo. 5 *****'s !!~

Great looking picture from one of Nikon's oddest models Mike.
I'm puzzled, how do you shoot infra red with it and get this great contrasty look?

@Curly: The image sensor in older cameras is naturally sensitive to certain infra red wavelengths, not very good for normal daylight photography. To combat this Nikon (and others) utilise a filter, in my 995 it was a blue filter. This blocks the IR and allows daylight light through. What you have to do is remove this blocking filter off the sensor and replace it with a Black or Very dark Red filter, so that 'only' IR passes through. A fiddly job to say the least !

Those clouds seem to boil up out of the dark sky. I like that plane tucked under the one cloud. A very beautiful photo. You have another fine tool for those situations that demand it.

No use..... it's blinking awesome, Michael. I love IR photography and this frame is a stunner with those clouds on a biblical proportion swallowing up the helpless aircraft. Love it.
