A gentler time, but a harder life

Westgate Street in Gloucester I think - the tower of St Nicholas Church in the distance .

As you say, the sheer quality and wealth of detail here is amazing. And, yes, this sure is Westgate Street . . .

Once again an amazing forgotten world full of intricate details. I like the vista leading to the tower - seems like a common feature in these pictures.

Such a wonderful look back to the days before technology ruled the world. I think though poorer, people were generally more content with their lives because they had no desire for material possessions, and perhaps there was more of an honesty back then. I'd love to get in a time machine and go find out.

Being in colour, really does make the period easier to relate to...

These are amazing images. The horse and cart is parked like we would a car. It seems so long ago and yet my grandfather, who was born during this era, farmed with horses.

As always the buildings of this generation just seem to tower above the people, little
girls and boys were often seen running around the streets without fear of what has
become the norm today. This is a gorgeous postcard with a beautiful central focal point.
I uses to love to blow up some of these series in the 1980's and sell them to interested
people or corporations, and then paint them in similar colors, I became adept at painting
the often early morning style of the sky. This is a beautiful example of a much loved time,
all but wiped off the face of the earth. Pity.
