Railway Bridge 1872

Michael Fresh (Chester, United Kingdom) on 21 May 2012 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

Many years ago I bought a few glass slides with images on from an antique shop in Holland. These 2" square glass plates are also called, lantern slides.

One of the images is this one of the first railway bridge across the River Maas - at the city of Dordrecht. The bridge was opened in November 1872. I don't know when this image was taken, but I imagine it could be from the same period. The bridge was targeted during WW II and now belongs in the history books, having long been replaced. But I still have the glass slide, which has survived all these years.

My book entitled, Looe in Cornwall a photographic tour, is on sale now.
